Quiet and Solid, But Not So Cool It’s big, it’s blue, it’s solid… does it do the job? In a word: no. I have a large laptop, an Asus G73 17.3″ gaming laptop. This beast won’t fit on most other coolers, and based on some of the amazon reviews, I decided to try it out.The pros? It’s very solidly built; I have no worries about the laptop on this cooler. The fan is quiet: in fact, I think my laptop is louder when its own fans are going at full tilt. The cons? Well, it doesn’t appear to actually cool my laptop substantially. At full load with its Radeon 5870 and Core i7, this laptop can hit almost 100C in the graphics card. Over a full battery of totally unscientific tests, the cooler might reduce that by 5C or so when at full load, and makes no difference at all to the idle temperature. And it’s easy to figure out why: there isn’t much air moving very quickly. There’s plenty of room for the air to flow, both around the laptop and around the cooler, but in order to make the fan so quiet,…
